Elizabeth Shoaf, then 14 years old, disappeared while walking home from school one calm afternoon in 2006. She was stopped by a man dressed as a police officer. He wasn't.
He guided her to a secret underground bunker deep in the South Carolina woods, through undergrowth and quiet. He shackled her there. attacked her. day after day.
Search crews searched the woods above. She listened below, invisible and defenseless.
Elizabeth, however, observed him. discovered his patterns. earned his confidence.
She slipped to the edge of the bunker one night when he was sleeping, holding his phone and hoping for a signal.
One text message got through: "Hey mom. I'm in a pit where the large trucks enter and exit, across from Charm Hill. A bomb is present. Make a police call.
It was sufficient. And it wasn't searchers who were passing by as the jungle awoke once more. It was a rescue.
We have a great deal of pride in our own Elizabeth Shoaf. She is assisting us in modernizing the Food Pantry to provide our customers with healthier options. For individuals in need, we now provide diabetic and hypertension boxes.
